team GB runners upDate Posted : 8th October 2008
The BISHA Mens Team GB travelled to Stegersbach in Austria over the weekend of 3rd - 5th October to play in the IISHF European Championships. The opening game against Germany was a sign of an improved and confident team, resulting in a two all draw. They later went on to win their game against Netherlands 4:1.
No game is easy in a tournament full of teams taken from the cream of talent, and Team GB proved their worth by remaining undefeated until the Sunday morning, defeating Denmark, Austria, and Poland on the Saturday. Sunday morning found the team facing Switzerland, the defending Champions, we were unlucky to lose this match 2:0. By this time, all the teams had suffered a defeat and the semi finals found us drawn against the Swiss again.
The match was an end to end spectacle, finally going to a thrilling and nail biting penalty shoot out., with Team GB the victor.
The first semi final had been a 5:2 victory to Germany over Denmark, meaning a Team GB v Germany final.
For the first time in over 10 years, Team GB were in a European Championship final.
In spite of the teams valiant efforts especially following such a hard fought semi final, Germany proved to be too strong for us and the game ended 6:3 to Germany ( 2:0, 2:0, 2:3)
Congratulations to all the players for a spectacular display, and a special mention for James Tanner who was voted dream team goaltender.
